I never thought that I would be a published author when I went to medical school and I certainly never thought that I would become a voice for professionals who needed to attend to their mental health. But sometimes you are called to do things that you never imagined. I became a physician because it was what I wanted since I was 5 years old. Every step I took in school was designed to get me to my ultimate goal. I completed college in 4 years and immediately entered medical school. I fell in love with the field of Psychiatry as soon as I stepped foot at my clinical site and I have never looked back.
I really do love being a physician, but there is a certain level of stress that comes with being an accomplished professional that I didn’t foresee all those years ago. Like a lot of physicians, I had a tendency to put the needs of everyone else before my own. I worked long hours because I thought I needed to, but in reality there were always several things left on my to-do list at the end of the day. I also put a lot of effort into being a good wife and mother because my family is amazing! The one person I left off the list was myself. By doing so, I jeopardized my ability to be effective for all of those people who needed me.
I have also learned that I am not alone. I know several professionals (lawyers, doctors, executives, etc) who are all in this same boat. Some of them have a mental health disorder that needs treatment. Others just need to take better care of themselves so that they can function at their highest level. This book was written for either of these individuals and I am hopeful that it will provide the information needed to determine the next best step in improving overall mental health.
